I buy comics. I buy DC animated movies. I love heroes more than anime. But I’ll be damned if I’ve ever seen a hero PVC I -MUST- have.
A lot (not all) of it is the faces, and sadly, this one doesn’t seem to be the exception.
I hear this a lot about Shunya Yamashita figures. I don’t get it, what’s wrong with the faces?
Well, Shunya’s girls all have fairly similar faces. Like Diskvision and Orchid Seed, they take one face and body type and stick with it. Nothing wrong with that but after some time you see the similarities too often so its time to stop buying.
I disagree with this. Looking through the Yamashita figures I own, I can tell the difference quite easily. While they are all made in similar styles I think it’s the Yamashita style that makes his figures different from the rest of the figures out there. Artists tend to favor a specific style, and it’s the adherence to that style that gains them the recognition. How many other figure lines are sold on the designer’s name? There are a few but there are not many.
While I DO see why people say the figures have similar faces, I think many of the differences are subtle but effective. Is it possible that an artistic nuance is lost on figure collectors? I actually find Power Girl’s face drastically different from some of the other Marvel bishoujo figures, same with the body type.
Any comic fan worth their salt would know that both Super Girl and Power Girl are Kara Zor-El, so these two figures have reason to be more similar than any other pair of figures.
The faces are quite different. Power Girl has rounder eyes, a more roman nose, fuller lips and a more prominent chin. Granted the face structure is similar, but I believe that is one of the things that makes this indicative of a Yamashita figure.
The bodies are totally different, Super girl is much more slender with her leaner muscles and more petite frame. Power Girls bust is considerably larger, much like the comics.
Of course, most comic women have similar body types; this has been one of the greatest criticisms of the industry for years now.
I realize not everyone is going to like this style, but I think claiming that the faces of the figures are too similar is a case of observation being marred by expectations. People see the Yamashita name, they expect to see the same and they become blind to the differences.
Isn’t that his ‘trademark’ style? I don’t mind it most of the time, but it does feel as if it is a shunya girl cosplaying as marvel and dc characters after a while instead of the character themselves.
Good point. I actually LOVE figures that are cosplaying as other characters. The Asuka cosplaying as Yoko is on my “to someday get somehow” list.
I am a long time fan of Shunya Yamashita. For my money, it doesn’t get much better than his shii arisugawa figure. If he ever designs a Sonico figure… I’ll be in trouble!
Back to THIS figure. The only thing I find odd is how her fist doesn’t touch her hip. What I REALLY like about this figure is how it is both busty and sinewy. I have an entire collection of AniComi figures that I need to get rid of to make room for these figures.
Consider it bought.
Ugh!! I am a big fan of Shunya Yamashita, but I hate this.
i like power girls face, but theres something about the body i dont like, maybe its muscular, i dont know. but i like PH’s face, especially her hair. i own x-23, was so excited that they made a PVC of my favvourite character, but i found x-23’s expression a little insipid.
