Good Smile Company is going to releae Yuri ( ゆり ) 1/8 PVC figure from the anime “Angel Beats!” ( エンジェルビーツ ), a joined project of Key, Aniplex, Dengeki G’s Magazine, and P.A. works. Will be released in April 2011. Around 195mm tall, 5,524 yen.

For those who don’t know, this Yuri figure is actually created entirely from 3DCG. They make the model with 3D program and port it out with 3D sculpting machine. As you can tell form the price tag, they can keep the cost low with this 3DCG method. It is not something new. This is actually how plastic model being made nowadays. And GSC have done this with Nendoroid for a long time too.
Personally I don’t really like it. Somehow I think it is lack of something, like missing the sculpture spirit. As an so-call artist myself (I’m a graphic designer for those who care), I really feel “WOW” when I see a nice sculpted figure. But now I really don’t feel a thing when I know that this Yuri is made out of 3DCG. 3DCG is way too easy to make things perfect (I’m a 3D modeler too btw) compared to hand craft something out of clay.
Oh well, that is just my point of view as an artist. But on the other hand, as a poor figure collector, I really love how GSC can keep the cost low like this. I’m not surprised at all if GSC charge us 7,800 yen for her! Angel is on her way too. She should be annoucned before the end of this year. Since they’re so cheap, I think I’ll buy both of them! =D

GGT I totally agree with you- I wanna look at a figure and feel the FLAMING PASSION from the sculptors SOUL, that each detail was lovingly handcrafted with a pinpoint intensity and with nothing less than DIVINE ORDER!!!!!
… So basically all sculptors should sculpt as if from an 80’s shonen manga.

lol so i pre-ordered the kanade/yuripee arcade prize.. *stupid me* lol they didnt have a picture until it was released and shipped and they look HIDEOUS lol. i did find something “good”, its cheap enough and ugly enough i can display in my car without fear from the sun or heat.

Hmm. My guess would be that it’s the sculptors who are making these 3D models so they probably won’t lose their jobs lol. But who knows?

Yuri isn’t the most carefree character so I can’t imagine why they decided to “sculpt” her with this expression. I hope GSC fixes the stockings; they’re too shiny and so tight that it looks like they’d cut off her circulation.
Oh, so that’s why I thought there was something funny about her sculpt. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t look as natural as it could be. Anyway, I already preordered mine. <3 Yuri.

I completely agree. The only reason I collect anime figures is because I know someone made the figure, put some love into it. This just ruins everything. I think the same aspect also goes for Vocaloid(although I’m a fan of them~).
